SCHADE, PTE. HERBERT N. Reg. # 175334

Norman Herbert Schade was born April 22, 1896 in Chapman Twp., the son of John Schade and Barbara Shmermund.

At the time of the 1901 census, the family was identified as living in Chapman Twp. At the time of the 1911 census, the family was identified as living at 6 Biddy St. West, Magnetawan.  Norman was identified as a salesman.

Herbert married Cecelia Agnes Hutley in January 1919.

Their daughter Barbara was born July 6, 1921 in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Herbert died December 17, 1926 in Thorold. Norman was identified as a millwright.

(In his Attestation papers, Herbert Norman had identified that he was a carpenter. He identified that he had previously been with the 44th Regiment.

In his Discharge Certificate Sergeant Herbert Norman Schade is identified as having enlisted in Welland on September 11, 1915 with the 86th Battalion.

He is identified as having served in France with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps.

He was discharged August 25, 1919.

Herbert arrived in England on May 29, 1916 on the S.S. Adriatic.

By October 8, 1916 he was in the ‘Field’ (France) with the 5th Machine Gun Corp.

He was hospitalized in May of 1917

In October/November 1917 he was made A/Corporal and then Sergeant.

In April 1918 he appears to have been transferred to the Canadian Army Gymnastic Staff.
