The name should be William James Shier according to his Attestation paper (but transcribed as Shirr in the digital record index).

William James Shier was born November 29, 1895 in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, the son of Charlotte Jane Smith and Phillip Shier.

In 1901 the family was identified as living in Glen Ewen, Assiniboia, The Territories.

At the time of his recruitment William James indicated that he was living in Magnetawan.

(Of further note: Born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan although parents married in Magnetawan October 10, 1881. Family lived there until around 1911 when it is noted that his sister died in Parry Sound. Listed as living in Magnetawan at time of enlistment – mother there. After war was expected to go to Magnetawan but ended up in Oshawa by 1921. His sister Charlotte Jane Shier had married Alexander Hayes MacLachlan June 1, 1908 in Magnetawan.)

William was discharged November 5, 1919.

He was identified as having joined the 2nd Depot Battalion, C.O.R. on January 8, 1918 in Oshawa.

He is identified as having served in Canada in the 2nd Depot Battalion, C.O.R. and the 2nd C.A.S.C. (Canadian Army Service Corps - branch of the military responsible for supplying troops in the field).
