Walter Smith was born Feb 7, 1891 to James and Dora (Broderick) Smith. He married Mabel Ida Wager March 15, 1920

At the time of the 1901 census the family lived in Croft Twp. At the time of the 1911 census, the family was listed specifically at Lot 7, Concession 1 of Croft.

Walter is on the left in the picture of the Smith brothers shown below:

Walter joined the Service July 4, 1918. He identified his present address as Port Anson and that he was a farmer,

On March 15, 1920 Walter married Mabel Ida Wager in Magnetawan.

At the time of the 1921 census, Walter, Mabel and their 10 month old daughter Mildred were identified as living at Ahmic Lake, Croft Township. The couple subsequently had two other children.

He joined the 2nd Depot Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment.

In his Discharge Certificate it identifies that Walter enlisted in the 2nd Depot Battalion, 1sr C.O.R, on July 4, 1918.

It further identified that he served in the 8th Reserve Battalion and 2nd C.O.R.D. in England.

He was discharged August 12, 1919.

Jack Crossman understood that Harold was in in 1914 and was in heavy fighting. Walter in July 1918 and got as far as England stationed as Whitely Camp where he got the flu.  He was a sniper but did not see action.

Walter arrived in England August 15, 1918

He was hospitalized in March of 1919.
