STEWART, FRANCIS ‘FRANK’ CHARLES

Frank was born April 25, 1927 in Magnetawan, the son of David and Rita Stewart.

Frank enlisted in 1944 in the Canadian Battalion for service overseas with the rank of Sapper, but was demobilized before being sent overseas. (Frank is briefly discussed in an earlier section of this report.)

Frank rejoined the Special Forces Battalion in August 1950 and spent several months training at Fort Lewis, Washington.

The Canadian Battalion rained as a group and shipped out together to Korea in April 1951. He spent 15 months in the forward positions of battle as a Sapper, then was sent back to Vancouver, B.C. on a troop ship.

After a leave Frank was stationed at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering at Chilliwack.

His next tour of duty overseas was 1977-78 as Corporal in charge of heavy equipment for the Peacekeeping Force in the Sinai Desert of the Gaza Strip. This is the area where the Palestinians and Israelis had been at war.

He spent the fall of 1978 in Chilliwack and then spent two years as Sergeant in charge of base maintenance at Fort Churchill, Manitoba.

He later served as an instructor in Chilliwack, B.C., Gagetown, N.B. and at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa where he retired with 25 years of service. He steadily progressed from Sapper to Chief Warrant Officer in the Royal Canadian Engineers.
