Elon Study Abroad Program

Summary

Elon University is ranked #1 for it's Study Abroad Program. As of 2012 Over 70% of Elon students have studied abroad. Elon offers Semester Programs, Winter Term Programs, Summer Term Programs, Independent Experiences and lastly, Non-Elon Programs. Within each one of these programs, there is a lot to offer to each and every student. With almost 3 out of 4 Elon students study abroad it is apparent that the university is trying to make that number even larger. President Leo Lambert plans to quadruple the school's budget for financial aid for overseas study over the next three years. President Lambert explains his passion for the study abroad program with this statement, “The reason for this is simple, to be successful ... students today must understand and interact with people of different cultures, faith backgrounds and languages.”Johanna Markiewitz, a current junior at Elon University who has has studied abroad twice, says that she learned countless lessons from her experiences. Johanna traveled once to Costa Rica as a part of the Elon Center Program and a second time to Peru as a part of an Independent Study Abroad Program. Although she learned many lessons, she says that "the biggest thing was learning about what other countries think about the U.S., but I also learned a lot about other cultures in Central and South America. My Spanish has also improved which is very beneficial to me now." This is just one example of an Elon student who's experience studying abroad was both fun and insightful.

 

Elon Semester Programs

-       Study abroad for a semester to immerse yourself in a foreign country and culture

-       At the Elon Centers Abroad: given the opportunity to study with a group of Elon students and Elon faculty

-       On affiliate programs: given the opportunity to study abroad with another study abroad program sponsored by a U.S organization or directly enroll in classes at a university abroad

-       Some semester programs can by financed by the cost of tuition, room and board, plus the additional costs of airfare and spending money

Winter Term Programs

-       The most popular term to study abroad

-       Nearly 30 different programs are offered

-       Includes intensive 3-4 week courses taught by Elon faculty

-       Travel with a group of 16-30 Elon students and 2 faculty leaders

-       Requires preparation for the winter program by taking part in a one semester one hour course during fall semester

-       Each course ranges in cost and includes international airfare, lodging and transportation abroad, entrance fees for museums, cultural sites and other events related to the course

 

Elon Summer Term Programs

-       Range from 3-9 weeks

-       Opportunities include:

  • Completing an internship

  • Learning a new language

  • Enrolling in classes at a university abroad

  • Costs vary depending on each individual course

 

Independent Experiences

-       Independent research or studying abroad must be done under the supervision of an Elon faculty member

-       Must apply for an Independent Elon Program Abroad (IEPA)

 

Non-Elon Programs

-       GEC requires that students attend an Elon-vetted study abroad program unless there is a major academic reason why they shouldn’t

-       If choosing to study in a non-Elon program, a petition must be completed

 

Application Process:

Applications are reviewed and evaluated by the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) and they will then assign students a status. Applicants will be notified of their application status on decision date listed on the program brochure page of the particular program. If conditionally accepted or approved, the program manager will notify the applicant and make them aware of any additional materials or elements needed for full acceptance. After receiving the decision email, the applicant must log into their application homepage to commit to their program and complete all other necessary elements.
