Attica Resident

(Nov. 28, 1906-June 14, 2011)

Biography

Eve was born in Bennington, NY in 1906. Her family moved to Attica in the Winter around the year 1910 on horse and wagon. Their new Attica home resided on 112 Market Street, approximately across from Buffalo Street towards West Ave.

Eve attended the Old Prospect School until its bad furnace cause it to burn down in 1922. She and her sister continued classes at the First Presbyterian Church until they rebuilt the school. Evelyn was a member of the first graduating class in the new school. The class size was about 26-27 and they graduated at the Opera House, where the ceremonies used to be held.

She then got a job at the Attica Packaging Company on Jackson Street. There she worked making bushel baskets. Eve was not a fan of the work and one day she walked across a field to the Westinghouse Plant on Favor Street where her father worked and applied for a job there. She was hired as a secretary and worked there for 42 years until she retired in 1962.

Eve would teach Sunday school classes at Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, where her great grandfather Sierk was a founder.

Evelyn would pass away at the age of 104 in Le Roy, NY and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery.
