The single largest piece of infrastructure in town is the ExxonMobil refinery, a huge industrial works of pipes and tanks and huge plumes of steam, occupying 2100 acres of land just north of downtown. The plant was first established here on 225 acres of former cotton fields in 1909 by Standard Oil. The plant will celebrate its 100th "birthday" this year. It is the second largest refinery in the united states (in terms of production volume), after ExxonMobil's refinery in Baytown, Texas.

The plant includes the following units, all owned by ExxonMobil: Baton Rouge Refinery (BRRF) Baton Rouge Chemical Plant (BRCP) Baton Rouge Plastics Plant (BRPP) Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant (BRPO) Baton Rouge Resin Finishing Plant (BRFP) Port Allen Lubricants Plant (PAL) Anchorage Chemical Terminal (ACT)
