ECIRMAC (also known as the Refugee Center) exists to provide services essential to refugee and immigrant resettlement in East-Central Illinois and to aid in the exchange and preservation of their respective cultures.  As an organization, we believe in the inherent worth of all human beings, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, race, or cultural heritage.  We similarly believe that it is possible and desirable for all human beings to live peacefully together, and to work together to create a more loving and compassionate world in which everyone's basic human needs and rights can be secured.   Among the many services offered are....

  • Advocate and liaison in clients' places of employment, schools, hospitals, courts, with landlords, etc.  
  • Aid in completing paperwork for citizenship, asylum, residency, family reunification, etc.
  • Preparation for citizenship exams
  • ESL tutoring
  • Assistance with applying for government benefits for which an individual is eligible
  • Case management and counseling
  • Cultural preservation support
  • Referrals to community resources
  • Tutoring and intercultural socialization for school aged children
  • Promoting unity between immigrants and refugees and the broader CU area 
  • Community education about immigrant and refugee issues in Champaign County

    • Translation services available for documented certifications or other employment-related paperwork. (Please be aware that each translation of official certificates costs $20!)
    • New job orientation, with an interpreter (if necessary)
    • Worker's Compensation claims and concerns
    • Other job-related services (help to renew insurance forms, applications,)

    Adaption aid and services for refugees and immigrants

  • Help with petitions for permanent residence, family reunification documents, and applications concerning violence against women (VAWA -Violence Against Women Applications)
  • Citizenship services
  • Help with activities designed to preserve ones' unique culture
  • Address immediate demands for emergencies and needs (only for refugees!)
  • Free copies of local news bulletins (in four languages)
  • Private English classes & the instruction of basic literacy in native languages
  • Familial support-oriented activities
  • Regular public programs on saturday mornings (recreational activities)
  • Connection with the public school system in Champaign & Urbana
  • There are bicycle racks and a parking lot on the south side of the church.
  • Coming from the center of campus?  Head to Green street and go east until you reach Birch street.  It's about a 15 minute walk from the Union.

Services are regularly offered in English, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin and Russian.  Other languages can be accommodated with advanced notice.
