The Red Herring is a vegetarian restaurant that has been serving the Urbana-Champaign community for over thirty years. It was started by the Channing-Murray Foundation as a way to put Unitarian-Universalist principles into action. As a non-profit they donate all the money they make towards making the restaurant better for our cooks and customers, and to keeping our prices accessible to folks trying to live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle.

Cooperatively run, the Herring serves lunch five days a week from 11am-3pm and is always looking for volunteers.  Work for an hour or more and get a free meal!!

By cooking from scratch they are committed to providing healthier lunch alternatives.  Food justice is also important to the Red Herring, so they cook with local ingredients whenever possible. They carry their own Direct Trade Organic Coffee and include desert with all meals.

They understand that leading a healthy lifestyle can be expensive, but by offering folks the opportunity to volunteer in exchange for a meal they hope to make leading a healthy, responsible lifestyle easier. This also gives people hands-on kitchen experience! They seek to educate the public about food, including the uses of different vegetables and spices, how to replace animal products in everyday cooking, and various issues of food and environmental justice. All of this takes a LOT of LOVE: from Channing-Murray, from Red Herring Staff, and most importantly from Red Herring Volunteers and Patrons!

The steps leading to the Red Herring are found on the parking lot side
