Davis Wiki has stated for several years that "the Sakya school is apparently the only main branch of Tibetan Buddhism that is not represented in Davis."  In fact, a member of the Sakya lineage has lived in Davis since 1987.  Wayne Verrill received the complete transmission of the Sakya lineage from Ngor Thartse Khenpo Sonam Gyatso (1933-1987), formerly abbot of Ngor university in Tibet, during the years 1977-1987.  The content of those traditional teachings received is now being published in the Classics of the Early Sakya series.  Volume I, The Yogini's Eye, was published in 2012, and Volume II, The Precious Tree, will be published in 2017.  Additional volumes are under development.  Wayne has also received numerous transmissions of the Nyingma lineage, and follows the Ri-me (non-sectarian) tradition of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-1892) and Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro (1893-1959), the latter being the Ngor Thartse Khenpo's root teacher.

Wayne has been a Buddhist scholar and practitioner for forty-three years, and began teaching classical Tibetan language and other dharma classes and tutorials in the 1970s and 1980s.  Since 2010, he has taught language classes and lead study groups, mostly at the Davis Dharmata, as well as providing individual instruction.  Advanced individual instruction given in the classical tradition is available completely free of charge to new students who either meet qualifications, or who are desirous and capable of undertaking a great challenge.  Instruction is also available in support of The Complete Path, the seven-year training course being offered beginning in 2017 by the International Buddhist Academy (a Sakya affiliate) in Kathmandu, Nepal.
