It was held in solidarity with the national public in response to the murder of Freddie Gray, an act which triggered the 2015 Baltimore riots. The walk-out segued into a rally at the MU flagpole wherein a call for justice and direct action was made in order to bring attention to the racial prejudice among the general populace and police forces that has resulted in violence against African-Americans throughout the United States. The event also spurred a march around the city. Approximately 340 students particpated in the walk-out.
