The Detroit Science Center will assume operation of the museum from the Detroit Public Schools under a 10-year agreement that began January 1 2010. The collections remain DPS property, but new items will belong to the Science Center. DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb closed the museum in August 2009 due to the district's budget problems. The Science Center plans to host several open house events starting in March 2010, and a full reopening is expected in July.

The Science Center plans to offer field trips, outreach and on-site Programming On-site programming reading literacy groups, family activities, including topics such as Mommy & Me, Daddy & Me, a lending collection of learning kits, and teacher professional development.

Closing for several weeks in late 2011 along with the Detroit Science Center because of financial problems.
