Anson Phelps Stokes, called Anson Jr. until his son Anson Jr. took that appellation, was a son of Anson Phelps Stokes; he attended Yale University, graduating in 1896 with a bachelor's degree. In 1897 he entered the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts to prepare for the priesthood, and received his bachelor of divinity degree in 1900. In 1899, he was appointed secretary of Yale University, second in command to the college president; he also served as assistant rector of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut from 1900 to1918. In 1925, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest.

The announcement has been made of the engagement of Rev. Anson Phelps Stokes, Jr., of New York, and Miss Carrie Mitchell, of Washington, as the finale of a romantic courtship in the Adirondacks the past summer. Both were guests for a month at the William K. Townsend camp on Upper St. Regis Lake. The wedding will probably take place next spring in Washington.
