Robert 'Bob' Alexander Bogie
NEW MILFORD, Conn. - Robert "Bob" Alexander Bogie, 76, of New Milford, Conn., died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at New Milford Hospital after a long illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1924 in Brooklyn, he was the oldest son of Robert R. and Florence Reid (Mclaren) Bogie. He was the husband of Abigail Louise (Haskins) Bogie.
Mr. Bogie graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in World War II, and served as an airplane mechanic and gunner in the No. 459 Bomb Group, No. 759 Bomb Squadron attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Among his decorations and citations are the Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II victory Medal.
After the war, Mr. Bogie attended Paul Smith's College and received an Associates Degree in Science. From 1946 to 1952, with his family and friends he built and raced hydroplanes in the 225 cubic-inch limited class in the United States, Canada and Europe, taking third place in the 1946 Gold Cup held by the Detroit Yacht Club, the first major regatta in Clayton, for exemplifying the romance and flavor of powerboating's past.
In 1956, Mr. Bogie, moved his family to New Milford and built Bogie Marine on Candlewood Lake, in New Milford, which he operated until he retired in 1975. He was a past president of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association and served as Secretary to the American Rower Boat Association. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Mr. Bogie was actively involved in Project New Hope, aiding and relocating Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees in the Danbury/New Milford area. He was a member of the Danbury area Computer Society and the Boston Computer Society.
Survivors include his wife; his brother, John Mclaren Bogie of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; three children, Robert Reid Bogie of Waterbury, Conn., Kathryn Louise Bogie of Brookfield, Conn. and Charles Alexander Bogie of New Milford, Conn.; two grandchildren, Jacob Alexander Bogie and Benjamin Wilson Bogie, both of New Milford; and his canine companion Buzz.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., today, at the Colonial Funeral Home, 87 Park Lane Rd., New Milford, Conn. A funeral service will be celebrated in St. John's Church, New Milford at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
