Elizabeth Woodruff Pine was a daughter of W. Warriner Woodruff and Gertrude Woodruff. She was class valedictorian at Saranac Lake High School, and graduated from Smith College and Harvard Law School. She was elected to State Supreme Court in 1976, serving as the first woman judge in the Seventh Judicial District. She served as a trial judge throughout the eight-county district as well as in Manhattan and the Bronx. In 1985, shortly after her husband's death, she was promoted to the court’s Appellate Division, serving until her retirement in 2010.
