Obituary for Dr. Emmanuel "Manny" Bernstein

Dr. Emmanuel “ Manny” Bernstein, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family and close friends on November 13, 2015. He was 85.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Manny came to live in Saranac Lake when he was two years old for his father’s Tuberculous cure. He graduated from Saranac Lake high school in 1948 and attended the University of Pennsylvania, SUNY Plattsburgh, and Columbia University. He attained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon.

He is survived by his wife, Meg and 4 1/2 cats, Jazzy, Teddy Bear, Cuddles, Bright Eyes and Blackie (he’s the half); his daughter Bobbie Bernstein Karp and treasured grandsons Joseph and Joshua Karp; his son Arthur and his wife Christine; and this year, his predeceased daughter, Vauna.

Manny’s purpose in life was to relieve the pain of both humans and animals. He founded the local humane society in his teen years and always believed that the lives of animals were as important as people.

He always pursued his passions which culminated in the publication of his book on education, The Silent Revolution and his journal, Alternatives in Animal Experimentation.

He especially loved being at his camp on Upper Saranac and feeling the motion of being on water. He loved anything that moved which included biking, sailing, driving houseboats and motorcycles. He loved to tinker with others to learn. He valued conversations with everyone, and embraced life and a good martini with extra olives and onions.

No services will be held. Friends are invited to contact the family directly. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Humane Society of the United States, Physicians for Responsible Medicine, or PETA.

Manny would like to share his favorite quote: "Logic can get you from A to B. Creativity can get you everywhere. (Albert Einstein)

Bye for Now!
