Alfred J. Yardley Jr., known as Jay, in 1968 created the cooperative Bartlett Carry Club from the remnants of the Saranac Club.   He served as chairman of the board of Jenkins Canada of Lachine, Quebec, a subsidiary of a valve manufacturing company founded by his great-great-grandfather in 1864.

Alfred Jay Yardley

SARANAC LAKE - Alfred Jay Yardley Jr., 44, of Bartlett Carry died yesterday evening at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 18, 1940, in New York City, the son of Alfred J. and Augusta (DuVal) Yardley.

Survivors include his wife, Fran (Forman) Yardley, and two daughters, Gwyn D. and Shana G. Yardley, all of Bartlett Carry, his mother of Connecticut; and a sister, Mrs. Pamela Paul of Florida.

Mr. Yardley had been a member of the United States Marine Corps., serving as a sergeant in Viet Nam. He then worked in administrative positions with various government and private agencies in Europe and North Africa.

After leaving his overseas employment, he and his wife came to the Adirondacks and have operated the Bartlett Carry Club since 1968.

Mr. Yardley was an early supporter of the movement to establish educational television in the Adirondacks. He also served as a volunteer instructor at Camp Adirondack.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Fortune Funeral Home. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity, in care of the funeral home.
