VFW Post elects woman commander

SARANAC LAKE - Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3357 may be the first post in the state, and possibly the nation, to have a woman commander.

Mrs Joyce Stott of Bloomingdale was installed last night as the post commander. As far as is known, she is the first woman to achieve this office.

"Its about time that there was a "woman commander," she said. Mrs. Stott, who will not officially take office until July, said that she will not know until the national convention if any other women have been elected to offices in the VFW. She noted that women have only been allowed to participate in VFW activities recently, although they have served in the armed forces overseas for some time.

Mrs. Stott said that one of her main goals will be to increase participation in VFW activities, especially by Vietnam veterans. She said that while paid membership in the local post is 100 per cent, active members are far fewer. She said she hopes that the post will have "an activity oriented membership" under her command.

Mrs. Stott served in France in World War II as a member of the signal corps. She was in the service for three years.

Other officers installed at Thursday's meeting were: Albert Gonyea - vice commander; George Landry - junior vice commander; Robert White - judge advocate; Earle Stott - adjutant; Keith Curry - quarter-master; and Kenneth Lavine - chaplain.
