FOREST FIRE CORPS READY FOR BATTLE

Albany, Mar. 21.. — The State Conservation Commission has completed organizing its forces to combat the expected spring forest fire season.

Tower men have been assigned to their stations, water holes in isolated stations are being filled and the department aviator, Albert Leo-Wolf, is ready for the first alarm. Kinne P. Williams, supervisor of fire control, said the department is now better equipped to detect fires and fight them effectively than ever before.

He believes most forest fires are due to carelessness. Camp fires and the failure to smother them, matches, lighted cigars and cigarettes and grass fire are given as the main causes. Fewer are caused. by sparks from locomotives, he says.

The reduction of the number of fires is entirely up to the public, he says, but the department had been able to greatly reduce the loss. The most dangerous fire, be says, are those in high grass which frequently spread to nearby woods.
