Laurance Rockefeller was a venture capitalist, financier, philanthropist, a major conservationist and a prominent third-generation member of the Rockefeller family. He was the fourth child of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and brother to John D., III, Nelson, Winthrop, David and Abby Rockefeller Mauze.

He gave Camp Canaras to St. Lawrence University in 1964.

In 1967, he proposed turning 1.7 million acres of the Adirondack Park into a national park. The plan was not approved.
