Ned "Beast" Bauer

SARANAC LAKE — Ned "Beast" Bauer, 52, of 92-and-a-half Lake Street in Saranac Lake died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000 at the Adirondack Medical Center at Saranac Lake.

Born September 15, 1948 in Garden City, he was a son of Joseph W. and Marie (Sorensen) Bauer.

Mr. Bauer was raised along with his brother Jay by Alice and Carl Sorensen in Syracuse. The Beast earned his nickname as an avid wrestler while attending Nottingham High School in Syracuse. For three consecutive years, Beast was elected captain of the team while wrestling in the 127 lb. division, graduating in 1966. He attended Paul Smith's College where he experienced the beauty of the North Country. In the spring of 1970 he attended the "university of the world," traveling to London with his buddy Mike. He purchased a Triumph motorcycle and toured Europe for one-and-a-half years before returning to his beloved Saranac Lake. He was a professional bartender, working at Chuck's, Mike’s, the Alpine Hotel, the Back Door, Casablanca, the Waterhole and, lastly, the Vets’ Club for the past 10 years. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge No. 1508 and enjoyed boating and camping.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Craner and grandchildren Nicholas and Lucas Craner all of Syracuse; two brothers, Joseph Bauer of Edison, N.J. and Carl Sorensen of Saranac Like; two sisters, Linda Laba of Syracuse and Barbara Money of Baldwinsville; two nieces, Rickelle Laba of Syracuse and Allison Sorensen of Saranac Lake; four nephews, Scott Laba of Syracuse, Carl Sorensen of Tupper Lake, Jason Money of Baldwinsville and Kyle Sorensen of Saranac Lake, and his close friend, Ruth Stehl of Saranac Lake.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home withthe Rev. William Neil: pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiat-ing.

Friends wishing to remember Mr. Bauer may make contributions to the March of Dimes, the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or the Sons of the American Legion Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
