Roy A. Otis of Paul Smiths was a World War I Veteran of the U.S. Army. A private in Company E of the 128th Infantry, he died of his wounds. His name is inscribed on the "Roll of Honor of Citizens of the State of New York who died while in the service of the United States during the World War, Albany (1922)." He is buried in St. John's Cemetery in Paul Smiths, where his grave is marked: "He left his home in perfect health. He looked so young and brave. We little thought how soon he'd be laid in the soldiers Grave." Cemetery records show that he was serving in Company B, 146 Machine Gun Batallion, differing from those of New York State (above).

Made Supreme Sacrifice

Roy A. Otis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Otis of Paul Smiths, is another of the brave men from Franklin county who have made the supreme sacrifice in the cause of world freedom. According to official dispatches he died December 2nd from wounds received in action. He was operating a machine gun at the front when wounded.
