Walt Patnode

SARANAC LAKE - Walt Patnode, 86, of Rainbow Lake Road, passed away at his home Friday, May 1 1, 2007.

Born March 27, 1921 in Onchiota, he was the son of Oliver and Dora (LaMora) Patnode.

Mr. Patnode was raised in Onchiota and attended the local Onchiota School, and later attended Petrova  High School in Saranac  Lake. During the summer he worked various jobs including working for his uncle Hayden Tormey who owned an IGA grocery; his primary summer job was caretaking for local camps.

Walt was drafted into the Army in 1942, and served in the European Theater of Operations in Italy including Sicily. He was honorably discharged in 1944. Upon his return he became a full-time caretaker for different local camps in the area, and rented in the early 1990s.

On Jan. 1, 1951, he married Florence Paye at the Lake Clear Presbyterian Church and the couple relocated to Rainbow Lake around that time. In 1983, Walt and Joan E. Ormsby became companions and, until his death, they shared 23 years together.

He was a member of the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department. Walt's hobbies included hunting and playing sports, especially baseball. He was a long time member of the Brighton Blues baseball team. Bowling was another sport favored by Walt; he was a great bowler, he loved playing just about any sport. Wait also loved music; he was a member of a local country western bands "The Rhythm Boys," who were frequently featured on a local radio station on Friday nights. He played numerous instruments, among them piano, guitar, mandolin, the stand-up bass was his favored instrument. Mr. Patnode was also a member of the Gabriels American Legion and later joined the Saranac Lake American Legion.

He is survived by his companion of 23 years Joan; two sisters: Geneva Hammer and her husband Ed of Hammond, Ind. and Mildred Patnode of Onchiota; three brothers: Francis Patnode and his wife Vi of Fort Edward, Roland Patnode and his wife Jackie of Saranac Lake and Raymond Patnode of Saranac Lake, several nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife Florence in December 1980; his parents; and two brothers: Harold and Robert Patnode.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. May 15 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake . with a Veteran's service at 7:45 p.m. There will be a service 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lawthers officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Those wishing to remember Walt may make memorial contributions to High Peaks Hospice or the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department's rescue squad.
