Dr. Winfield O. Kelley maintained a private practice in general and thoracic surgery for three years in Saranac Lake. He later attended one of Historic Saranac Lake's TB Reunions in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Norwich, Conn. -- Dr. Winfield O. Kelley, 87, of 11 Butternut Drive and formerly of Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 1994 at his home.

Born in Hamilton on Aug. 11, 1906, he was the son of James A. and Iva (Plumbly) Kelley. He graduated from Colgate University in 1929 and from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1937.

In 1941 he married Cora Randles in Albany.

Dr. Kelley served on the resident staff at Albany Medical Center for three years, and one year at the Flower Fifth Ave. Hospital in New York City. He did two years of thoracic surgery residency at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He maintained a private practice in general and thoracic surgery for three years in Saranac Lake before moving to Connecticut. He served as chief surgeon for the State Tuberculosis and Chronic Diseases Hospital in Connecticut until his retirement in 1974.

Dr. Kelley was active in Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to the organization. He was past president of the New London Medical Society Eastern Branch of the National Tuberculosis Society. Dr. Kelley was a cooperator of the William W. Backus Hospital and also held the position of associate professor of surgery at the Yale New Haven Hospital and Hartford Hospital. He was also a consultant in thoracic surgery at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital and the William W. Backus Hospital. 

He was a member of and deacon for the Park Congregational Church of Norwich.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dr. Winfield O. Kelley of Wolfboro, N.H.; five daughters, Nancy J. Kelley of Middletown, Conn., Mary Ellen Johnston of North Vasselboro, Maine, Carol Bly of Wolfboro, N.H., Linda McCarthy of Vernon, Conn., and Marcia Budnikas of Hawaii; a sister, Phyllis Dupuis of Philadelphia, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were scheduled for today at the Park Congregational Church in Norwich. There were no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the United Community Hospice Program or to the Park Congregational Church. The Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, Conn., is in charge of arrangements. #
