History of Organization:

West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a historically black public university in Institute, West Virginia, United States. In the Charleston-metro area, the school is usually referred to simply as "State" or "West Virginia State". The school was founded under the Morrill Act of 1890.

Programs and Projects:

  • 4-H Youth Development: WVSU Extension has adopted a non-traditional approach to 4-H, focusing on youth arts initiatives and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.
  • Agriculture & Natural Resources: Community and adaptive gardens, urban forestry, assistance for the small farmer, and bringing agriculture education to inner-city youths are just some of WVSU Extension's efforts targeting agriculture issues for all ages.
  • Community & Economic Development: Making West Virginia’s communities viable, energetic and economically sustainable is the mission of WVSU Extension's Community & Economic Development efforts. Primary focus areas are community development and revitalization, regional and local economic development, and micro-enterprise and small business development.
  • Family & Consumer Sciences: WVSU Extension provides adults, youths, seniors and families with the latest in health, nutrition and consumer information, resulting in a healthier, happier West Virginia.
