Indonesia tsunami: Palu hit by 'worst case scenario'

"As scientists explained to the BBC, a combination of geography, timing and inadequate warnings meant that what happened in Palu was a worst case scenario... More than 1,000 people have died." Indonesia was caught off guard by a tsunami despite efforts to set up a more adequate warning system after the 2004 tsunami. After 2004, many 'DART' buoys were lined up on the coast of Indonesia to track incoming tsunamis, but these instruments were destroyed by fishermen in the 14 years leading up to the 2018 tsunami. Tsunami warnings were called off by officials immediately after the earthquake because they though that that type of plate boundary could not produce a large tsunami... they were mistaken. Indonesia was swept up in another tsunami without warning. #psycho #GEOG203
