The 2019 Hong Kong protests, also known as the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (Anti-ELAB) movement, are ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong triggered by the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill by the Hong Kong government.
The direct cause of the protest is the Hongkong government's response to a murder case in 2018 in Taiwan, where two people involved in the case are Hongkong residents. There is no present extradition treaty to Taiwan. Therefore, the HK government tried to propose a more complete Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance to solve this problem.
However, the new law triggers anger and dissatisfaction of some people in Hongkong and they started demonstrations and a series of action against this law and HongKong government.
