The prevalence of chronic pain was approximately 40% in the general Japanese population. It has a crucial impact on occupational and daily social life and seriously affects psychological health. As the population of Japan ages, it is important to recognize that chronic pain is a serious social issue, which should be addressed by the entire Japanese society. Specific and effective interventions are needed to reduce the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and its debilitating effects. Chronic pain in Japan is associated with mental health issues, decreased quality of life and social loss due to absence from work.
