East New York is the eastern most portion of Brooklyn. This neighborhood is primarily composed of minorities and is faced with poverty along with one of the highest crime rates in Brooklyn. These things have led to health disparities within the community that are a result of socio-economic variables that are perpetuated further by a history of racial practices. Racially, East New York is 52% Black, 37% Hispanic, 6% Asian, 3% White and 2% other. From this data, we can see that East Brooklyn is a majority-minority community.Other important figures that play into the disparities faced by the neighborhood are: 24% of the population did not graduate high school, 32% of the population is in poverty and there is a 14% unemployment rate.  In relation to the rest of Brooklyn and New York City, the poverty rates in East New York are significantly higher. In this neighborhood, we see that poverty has an effect on an important health disparity, life expectancy. In East New York the life expectancy is 77.7 years old. However, in white upper-middle class neighborhoods such as Battery Park it is 85.9 years old. This statistic exemplifies that East New York is disproportionately being hurt by the health disparities the area faces in comparison to wealthier neighborhoods within the same city. On top of the already ravaging health disparities, East New York has a shortage of primary healthcare providers which results in emergency rooms acting as the only source of healthcare. The emergency rooms are overcrowded and often avoided by many citizens due to the fact that the poverty rate is so high and many people may not be able to afford the care they need. In turn, chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes and asthma are not being controlled which has resulted and an increase of avoidable hospitalizations for these conditions. Another factor adding to the disparities seen is food insecurity, Brooklyn has a higher food insecurity rate than any of the other boroughs in NYC. Because of the high food insecurity rate, East New York is a food desert meaning that the neighborhood doesn't have access to nutritionally adequate foods which negatively affects the health of those who live there in yet another way.
