What do you know about Medication for Addiction Recovery?

Buprenorphine, also known as Suboxone, is a drug that prevents withdrawal symptoms. Around 35-40 doctors in the LV prescribe Buprenorphine, and 2 clinics give out methadone. PA is aggressively put an end to the opioid epidemic by making access to treatment and medication easier. Patients using these pain drugs stay in treatment longer. "If I didn't get on Suboxone, I would be dead today," said a patient, Ryan. He says it's comparable to someone with diabetes, who needs insulin injections daily.

The two most popular pain drugs, methadone and Buprenorphine, could be fatal if not taken as directed. They must be administered by clinics, and therefore patients must schedule visits to those clinics.

St. Luke's University Health Network and Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) don't prescribe medication-assisted treatment for addiction. LVHN is in the midst of offering Suboxone, though. #bio

I chose to discuss this because opioid withdrawal and painkiller addiction was a key topic in Cultural Geography and I wanted to find out how physicians in the Lehigh Valley treat opioid addiction.
