In Detroit, doctors may have found a new technology that could identify and eliminate types of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadliest forms of cancer mostly because it is almost always found too late. A woman was admitted to the hospital with a stomach virus, but they found a precancerous cyst on her pancreas. Pancreatic cancer does not produce any symptoms in the early stages, so it is rare for this to happen. Finding pancreatic cysts are not uncommon, but it is often hard to tell which ones will become pancreatic cancer. Currently, doctors rely on testing the fluid found inside the cyst. This method is not the best because 30-35% of patients' cysts could not be determined to be precancerous or not. Doctors at Ohio State have come up with a sort of 'virtual biopsy' that can diagnose cysts by looking at the cyst wall. The diagnosis of this method is accurate 96-97% of the time.
