Chechen became independent after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, located in the North Caucasus and controlled by Muslims before the Russian Federation regained its lost territory
The second Chechen war began on August 26, 1999. The Russian Federation, defeated in the first Chechen war, finally won the war. Chechen separatist forces were defeated, and Russia regained control of the Chechen region.
After multiple bomb explosions in cities such as Moscow and Buynaksk, the Russian government blamed Chechen separatists for Russian troops entering Chechnya on October 1. Russian operations ended Chechen Ichkeria's substantial independence at the time, allowing the federal government to regain control of the area.
