As the number of drug-related deaths drops throughout the City of New York, the Bronx continues to see an increase in overdose deaths. In 2018 alone, the borough experiences 391 deaths by drug overdoses alone, the highest number recorded. Epidemiologists who are studying this spike believe that it is due to users unknowing using fentanyl laced, non-opioid drugs. Community activists encourage users to learn bout Naloxone and take advantage of the injection sites around the Bronx. The pain in this article not only comes from all of the lives lost due to opioids, but also from the decline in safety that is felt throughout the community. Residents explained that highly trafficked roads are often littered with used needles that are left to be witnessed by children passing by.
