Every 15 minutes in America, a child is born after a prenatal exposure to opioids. Babies are born already going through withdrawal symptoms like trembling, vomiting, and weight loss. This adds another layer to the opioid crisis that often goes unnoticed: its effect on people that aren't even using the drugs themselves. This marker on the pain map represents a biological element of the opioid epidemic, as it highlights the physical symptoms that newborn babies suffer from when they are born addicted to drugs.
