After the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. riots erupted across Wilmington. The national guard was called in and stayed for nine months. This remains the longest military occupation of a U.S. city since the Civil War. The death of MLK had an emotional toll for many residents of Delaware, and the resulting riots and military occupation created a divisive and painful experience.
