Revitalization of Mississauga's Downtown Square

The revitalization of Mississauga's Civic Centre and Central Library Square is the City's largest construction project made possible through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program. It is planned to be a location for city events connecting residents and community groups through the arts, culture and heritage.

Details

  • $40 Million project
  • Unification of the Civic Square: The plan provides for one large square (north and south of the City Centre Drive , linking events on the square to the Civic Centre's Great Hall and the Central Library.
  • Redesigned City Centre Drive: The pedestrian friendly street can be closed during events
  • Interactive Water Feature: The existing reflecting pool on the Civiic Square will be replaced with a zero-edge water feature that can be drained and used for programming and will be changed into a skating rink during the winter.
  • Expansion of the Skating Rink: The size of the existing ice rink will be more that doubled. New ice making technology will be installed to allow a longer skating season and greater certaintly to maintain ice during the season
  • Redeveloped Amphitheatre: The amphitheatre will be opened up by removing walls and raising the floor as well as adding washrooms, a green room and a permanent shade feature.
  • Large Open Lawn: The library lawn surface will be changed to make it a large open lawn for hosting activities.
  • Permanent Stage: A permanent outdoor stage with a sound system will be positioned at the southern boundry of the Central Library Square at Burnhamthorpe Road West.
  • Media Screens: Media screens will project stage events and feature movie nights, digital arts and other event media
  • Event Vendor Area: The Central Library Square will have specialized seasonal open air markets with vending stalls.
