Mike Bullard worked Canada's comedy club circuit for over 10 years, where he developed a reputation as one of the quickest and cleverest comics around. Bullard worked full-time at other jobs while pursuing his comedy career, he played over 1400 gigs in his spare time. Bullard’s reputation as a brilliant, spontaneous comic and one of the country’s top M.C.s helped land him the offer from the Comedy Network to host its flagship program, Open Mike. He only quit his day job at Bell Canada a few weeks before "Open Mike" launched in the fall of 1997.

Open Mike debuted in November of 1997 on The Comedy Network and went on to be picked up by the CTV network in 1998. It was aired on both networks, Bullard's sharp, often self-deprecating humour, insightful jabs at the human condition and his ability to engage in raunchy, unscripted banter with audience members made Open Mike a favourite with television viewers.

The series had slowly achieved status as a key component of the entertainment scene in Canada. Often credited with fostering a Canadian star system, the show has featured a mix of celebrity guests from the worlds of film, television, stage, sports, music and politics on both sides of the border.

Notable guests included Nicolas Cage, Moby, Tommy Lee, Enrique Iglesias, Kathie Lee Gifford, Tony Bennett, Nelly Furtado, Nickelback, Burt Reynolds, Barenaked Ladies, Joan Rivers, Bo Derek and Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

In 2003, in one of the highest-profile deals in Canadian media history, Bullard moved to the CanWest media family with his show, The Mike Bullard Show. Bullard's contract with CTV expired and he signed a multi-year deal with Global, the network on which he would host The Mike Bullard Show. However, it was cancelled on March 12, 2004 after getting lower than expected ratings. This was partly a result of the fact after Bullard left CTV, his time slot was filled with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which quickly eclipsed his show in popularity within Canada.
