History

The Union was created in 1864 during the height of the Civil War. Although Grass Valley itself was sheltered from the fighting, the newspaper made its purpose clear: "For the Union, one and inseparable." This tagline is still published at the top of every newspaper today.

News and Reporting

The paper today is published six days a week and is available for purchase throughout Nevada County.

The Union focuses on many local issues unique to Nevada County such as mining, education, and efforts to combat Nevada County's meth problem. And makes sure to the community are well informed of the latest drug busts or sheriff raids. Sometimes humiliating or slandering individuals who later prove to be innocent. And for those individuals there is a section for corrections,but is rarely viewed by readers. The newspaper encourages letters to the editors. One of the paper's most popular features is the Police Blotter which is a collection of police reports from around the county. Sometimes, these can be quite humorous.
