The City of Lacey was officially incorporated in 1966, after the impending approach of Olympia necessitated a decision regarding the future of the area. The first vote failed in 1964, but with strong advocacy, it successfully passed two years later. After two and a half decades, the City of Lacey finally took an interest in sustainability, paving the way for many more cities within the State of Washington.

Lacey is one of the only municipal districts in the state that can boast of having 100% green energy, LED traffic signals, and electrical vehicle charging stations at select locations. They sport a pioneering residential recycling program. They also have tree mandates that resulted in the city receiving the “Tree City USA” designation. In line with this policy is the interest the city has shown in keeping parks and recreation areas prevalent within the city. Not only does the city promote its local businesses, but it has sustainable guidelines for buildings and projects. The city also partnered with LOTT, the Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and Thurston County Water Alliance, to reuse storm water and purify sewage for the “Purple Pipe” program. The City also has habitat restoration for salmon and other local wildlife.
