Summary from "Mother of Counties"

Born January 23, 1816 in North Carolina. Settled in Powhatan area by 1843, practicing medicine. Practice was supposedly on location of commercial building, and later operated a general store in the same location. Dr. Balfour’s store was rented as temporary courtspace for 8.33 a month. He served as a captain in the Confederate Army as a physician with Company D, 13TH Arkansas Volunteers. Died April 1884, buried in the Powhatan cemetery. Survived by one daughter, Mollie Henley Balfour.
