"Elizabeth Rebecca"1 was born on August 4, 1853 in Powhatan. She was the daughter of Dr. Marion DeKalb Steele and  Frances Poer Steele. Her family owned slaves, and, according to her obituary, she was sympathetic to the southern cause for the rest of her life. She married her husband, William, in 1876, and had eight children. 

Elizabeth died of a stroke on October 25, 1935.2
