Mabel Lee Smith was found not guilty of the murder of her husband Charles Lee by poisoning strychnine on July 20, 1924.  She was charged with murder in the first degree and arrested by the Sheriff of Lawrence County on September 4, 1924 without bail. She denied committing the murder stating that she was at her home several miles from the scene of said murder, knew nothing of it, and had took no part in the commission of said crime. She believed the indictment was based on the testimony of Ms. Jack Odell, who she believes to be away at the time of the murder. She was eventually bailed out after petitioning for a writ of habeaus corpus, and later acquitted.
