Lucas Brooks Poindexter (September 4, 1886-November 29, 1940) was an attorney that practiced in Powhatan, Arkansas. His practice was located inside the commercial building. According to his letterhead, he partnered with J.W. Phillips and they were considered the successors to the office of Baber and Mack. He sold the building to Sanders J. Zimmerman. Poindexter also served as county judge.

Poindexter was educated at Arkansas College (Now Lyon College) and graduated in 1887. He was classmates with George Walter Wells.1

In 1887, Poindexter delivered a lecture at the Arkansas College in Batesville entitled "Western Progress."1a

In 1899, Poindexter was commissioned as a notary public, living in Powhatan.2

In 1903, L.B. Poindexter was elected vice president of the Bank of Black Rock.3 The same year, Poindexter was apparently involved in stock raising, having a cow that birthed triplet calves.3a

In 1904, Poindexter was appointed to the state Board of Trade.4 He was also appointed a delegate to the state good roads convention.5 The same year he also was listed as an incorporator of the Bank of Portia.5a

 In 1905, Poindexter was appointed to finish out the term of Judge Fulkerson who was unable to complete his term.6

In 1906, Judge Poindexter had both county courthouses insured. The Walnut Ridge courthouse was insured through J.N. Beakley for 8,000 dollars. The Powhatan Courthouse was insured for 5,000 dollars through T.J. Scott of Portia.7

In 1907, Poindexter began campaigning to move the county seat from Powhatan to Black Rock.8

In May of 1908, Poindexter resigned from his position on account of poor health. Mr. H.L. Ponder was appointed to finish out Poindexter's term.9

By July of 1908, Poindexter was suffering from an ulcer in his side.10 He left for two months stay at Colorado Springs, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. E.T. Irby and Miss Mary Steadman.11

By  September 1908, Poindexter has lost the position of Judge and had taken a trip to Colorado for his health. He was a target of disparagement by the county republicans.12He stayed at Manitou, Colorado.13 He wrote from Colorado to his friend J.A. Martin that he was improving rapidly.14 By September 23, Poindexter returned to Lawrence and was reappointed judge by Governor Pindall.14a

In 1909, Poindexter represented Otto Marker who sued J.T. Brady of Black Rock. 14b

In 1910, Poindexter helped defend Dr. F.A. Andrews of Lauratown, who was being sued by Dr. J.M. Stephens/Stevens for slander. Court documents show that the jury ruled in favor of Andrews, but the only newspaper account of the case claim a hung jury.14c 14d

In 1911, Poindexter was elected as the vice president of the Bank of Black Rock and named a director.15 He also ran for alderman of Black Rock.15a

in 1912, Governor Donaghy appointed poindexter as special probate judge to oversee a case in which the regular judge was disqualified.16 He also signed on to a letter expressing support for W.P. Smith for prosecuting attorney.17

In 1913, Poindexter was elected as the vice president of the Bank of Black Rock.18

In March of 1913, Poindexter appeared before Judge Jeffries in Walnut Ridge to face a charge of contempt of court. The charge was in connection with the murder trial of Wolf Benningfield. The charge revolved around allegations that a juror was tampered with in the trial of Wolf Benninfield, accused of killing John Bagley. Poindexter and State Senator Clyde Going were the defense attorneys. They were accused of inviting a juror to drink with them to influence his actions.19 The case went to the Arkansas Supreme Court in June.20 21 The case was decided in July before the Court recessed until September.22 Poindexter was exonerated and not censured for failing to report the incident. Due to his teetotaler stance, he was found to not be at blame.22a

In July of 1913, Poindexter began speaking public in support of George Hayes for governor23

In 1914, Poindexter defended John Baird, accused of killing Allen Beck at Ravenden.24  In 1914, A.S. Irby was partners with Poindexter. Irby operated the law office in Walnut Ridge.25 This same year he also represents W.H. Cooper, who claimed that O.E. Jacobs owned him wages from work at a sawmill. 25a

In 1915, Poindexter provided the alumni address at the graduation ceremonies of Arkansas College.26

In 1917, Poindexter was elected as the president of the Bank of Black Rock.27 The same year, he was appointed to aid the local county draft board in advising draftees of their legal options along with Ponder, Irby, Townsend and other prominent attorneys from Lawrence County. 28

In 1918, Poindexter was listed as a district manager in Black Rock for the Liberty Loan Organization.29

In 1922, Poindexter wrote a letter to the Joe Lyons Machinery Company expressing his satisfaction with their products. In the letter, he reveals he is president of the First National Bank at Black Rock, and uses their water pumps for his "private water works and to water my stock."30

In 1923, Poindexter had moved to Batesville. He lived on Fifth Street.31 He offered extra prize money in the local fair.32 He was also involved that year in the Methodist Church, serving on its board of stewards and volunteering as a collector and janitor.33 He delivered an address at the church that November for Armistice Day.33a

In 1924, Poindexter gave the commencement speech at the final graduation of the Charlotte High School. 34

In 1926, Poindexter was a director of the Citizens Bank and Trust. 35

In 1927 Poindexter and his wife vacationed in Eureka Springs.35a

In 1928, Poindexter was the "referee" related to the bankruptcy of the Batesville Motor Company.36

In 1929, he traveled with James P. Coffin to attend a meeting of Arkansas Bankers in Newport and comprised the Batesville delegation, having relocated there prior.37

Poindexter was married to Clara E. Stewart. He died in 1940 and she died in 1958. They are both buried at the Powhatan Cemetery.38
