Overview

The city's territory was ceded in the Black Hawk Purchase of 1832, in which the Sac and Fox Indians were defeated by European settlers.  The settlers established the village of Lillienthal, and later in 1858 the village of Gilbert next to it.  Eventually, the villages combined to become the town of Gilbert.  In 1900, Gilbert traded 70 acres of land to the Bettendorf brothers, William and Joseph, on the condition that they move their iron wagon business to the town.  Three years later, citizens petitioned to change the town's name to "Bettendorf."  A.L.C.O.A. moved to Riverdale in the 1940's and continues to create jobs and population growth for the area.  Our well-known riverboat casinos were launched in Bettendorf in 1991.
