Overview

Longleaf School of the Arts is a charter school in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. It is described as a "college preparatory school that prepares students for university rigor while allowing them to explore their creative and artistic side" (1), and prides itself on catering to the needs of students who do not always flourish in a "traditional academic setting" (1). Longleaf School of the Arts opened in 2013, and Rachel Davis is the current Head of School. Its mascot is the Flying Squirrel, and its colors are forest green and white.

 

Statistics

According to the statistics as reported on the school’s report card (2), Longleaf School of the Arts received a “score” of 74.7 percent, or a “B.” While some of their stats are relatively low (only 62 percent of students “proficient” in biology), some are incredibly high (95 percent or more students passing Math Three). It has a 56 percent graduation rate, as of graduation in June 2016. 65 percent of teachers at the school are fully lisenced.

 

Student Opportunities

Cabaret

Longleaf School of the Arts puts on a “Cabaret” once a year, serving as a showcase of student work and talent. In 2017, the theme of the Cabaret was “Metamorphosis.” (3)

Theatre Productions

Longleaf School of the Arts also produces several stage productions throughout the year. In the 2016-17 school year, Longleaf produced Macbeth, Signs by Shel Silverstein, Saint Joan, and Cherrywood (4). The very first production held by the school in 2013 was a student-created version of Sophocles’ Requiem for the Dead, a collaboration between the theatre, music, dance, and art students.

Dance and Music

Longleaf School of the Arts regularly participates in music festivals and dance conferences. In the 2016-17 school year, students traveled to Charlotte for a dance conference, and participated in the MPA Music Festival in Raleigh. (5)

 

Art

Every year, the students in the visual art program travel to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. (5)

 

Community Service

As of the 2016-17 school year, Longleaf School of the Arts implemented a School Wide Community Service Day. In 2017, students traveled to over ten locations in North Carolina to provide service, including the Red Cross in Greenville, and the Raleigh Rescue Mission Child Development Center. (5)
