Feeding pigeons (and parrots) is illegal in San Francisco, according to section 486 of the municipal police code. Overfed pigeons produce unnaturally large broods, which are weaker, and pigeons who are fed often eventually lose their ability to forage for food.

Those who would like to report pigeon feeders can call SF police at (415) 553-0123.

Have you noticed that a lot of city pigeons are missing toes? That's due to a Staphylococcus infection commonly referred to as "bumble foot." Spread through contact with other pigeons and their feces, bumble foot causes tendinitis, arthritis, and joint abscesses.
