About Recyclemania

• Practice period is last two weeks of January.

• Competition is the 8 weeks that follow.

• We will compete in the "Benchmark Division" as it is less formal.

• Categories

  • Grand champion is for highest recycling rate as a percentage of overall waste.

    • Requires trash, paper, cardboard and cans & bottles to be weighed.

  • Stephen K Gatski Per Capita Classic is for highest recycling rate per person.

    • Must report Paper, cardboard and cans & bottles.

  • Waste minimization is smallest amount of recyclables and trash per person

    • Report Trash, cardboard, paper, and cans & bottles.

    • *Requires schools to pledge to understake at least 3 specific waste reduction practices in addition to reporting waste generation

Outreach campaigns

• Mr. Eco will do a video about recycling and composting

  • Kylie has footage from the Harbor Festival that could be used

  • Try and get this done to launch alongside recyclemania campaign

• Zero Waste can script it, stars: musty the mustang, mr eco, president armstrong

• Roll out video in January, get on KSBY, mustang daily, campus report

• Scott thinks the piece that is missing is the campus community involvement

• A unified student voice is the most powerful lever for change, how can EPC and ZW bring this voice together?

• Getting the word out about Cal Poly’s poor recycling percentage is crucial

• It is important for us to educate about other schools in the same categories (school pride)

  • Peer pressure is a huge motivator

• Garreth and Kylie talked about the amount of starbucks cups

  • Display trash on dexter lawn as an event/campaign

• Human behavior is really hard to change!

  • Peers have much more influence

• November is national recycling awareness month

  • Get people to post on facebook about what little things they do to reduce waste

  • Best idea gets a $50 gift card

• Get students to sign pledge that they are going to try more to reduce waste

• Facebook page for zero waste!

Logistics

• Facilities can provide all of the infrastructure for the competition

• Infrastructure in place for San Luis Garbage: they can provide regular weigh-ins.

  • Trash is total campus

• Recycling has 3 different avenues

  • Front loader

  • Rear loader

  • Rolloffs

• Due to the above, we had a group consensus to focus on a whole campus effort instead of just one area.

• Weights from San Luis Garbage are sent out once a week for commingled recycling.

  • Scott has numbers for diversion rate

  • There is a scale on campus but San Luis Garbage has their own and already weighs everything.

  • Construction waste has long been skewing the numbers in our favor

• Must get weekly numbers instead of monthly for the trash.

  • Facilities can work on this.

  • We can interpolate if we have to.

• We will have a meeting with housing, ASI, campus dining, scott, dennis, Rich, and green campus soon.

  • Last meeting determined  there is an incredible need for an outreach campaign

  • Facilities is frustrated with lack of support from student life and leadership and campus dining organizations.

    • Find out who the student members of the corporation board

  • Invite facilities with Zimbra calendar
