"Japanese mayors find the future in Scarborough"

On Monday July 24 1989, The Japanese Association of City Mayors made their only Canadian Stop in the City of Scarborough on their tour of North American cities.

They met with Scarborough Mayor Joyce Trimmer.

23 Japanese companies, including Toyota, Yamaha, Honda, had made Scarborough their Head Office location or had set up distribution from here.

As early as 1983, Moto Yamamori had been traveling to Japan annually for a month long visit to sell Japanese companies on locating their Canadian beach head in Scarborough.

Back then, Scarborough had what we might today call a trade office to drum up business from there to here.

Before Amalgamation, when Scarborough was charting its own course, things like this certainly helped back up the claim found in the then City of Scarborough's Motto - City of The Future !
