The Chateau Liberte is an old redwood lodge and campground once open to the public and now gated on private property. It has been rumored over the years that it would reopen again to the public but that does not seem to be the case.

The Chateau was said to have originally been a gathering spot for lumberjacks during logging operations over 100 years ago but there is not a lot of information about that period. What's for certain is that it was once a family or adult camp with swimming pool, camping areas and a lodge building with dining room and bar.

In the 70s the Chateau became a live music venue with appearances by a number of big name groups and by some groups that were destined to become big. Groups such as Hot Tuna, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Tubes and the early Doobie Brothers. There was the performance area with a small stage, a bar and pool tables. The place attracted a crowd that ranged from local hippies to Hells Angels to regular local folks who worked in San Jose or Santa Cruz.
