HealthMedia delivers scalable behavior change interventions with proven outcomes. It was founded in 1998 by Dr. Victor Strecher, a researcher in health behavior and health education at the University of Michigan.
HealthMedia developed a technology that emulates a nurse counseling session, but has the scalability of web content. This technology is used to create behavior change interventions across the entire care continuum, in the areas of wellness, disease management, medication adherence, and behavioral health.
In October of 2008, HealthMedia was acquired by Johnson and Johnson.
HealthMedia, was renamed Wellness and Prevention, Inc., and shrunk by about a third during a re-organization in September 2012.

HealthMedia had its inception in Michigan with University of Michigan professor Victor J. Strecher, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Science Officer of Health Media. Strecher recognized that the only way to help people was to provide personalized counseling services – and this typically meant face-to-face counseling. He noted that brochures, as they existed, did not effectively change behavior or help patients with their health or behavior. According to Dacko, these static documents served only to make the employer or health plan "feel better" about the degree of assistance it was providing, and did little for the targeted audience besides providing a fleeting palliative.
According the Kenneth Warner, the Dean of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, HealthMedia was based on research that was not recognized by the public health profession in peer reviewed journals. See: Out of the Blue: HealthMedia
